All For His Glory

As we end this year of 2008 and set our goals or resolutions for 2009, I am encouraging and reminiding myself of this one simple phrase as I prepare for 2009: It's All For His Glory. Simply stated, I am keeping in mind that everything I do is to always be for God's glory. Why should we have this mindset? The answer is simple.
Our salvation is for His glory:
Eph 1:11-12 (NIV) In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of His glory.
His created works are for His glory:
Psa 19:1 (NIV) A psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.
Miraculous works were / are done for His glory:
John 9:1-3 (NIV) As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" 3 "Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.
Our good works, which we do only with His help, are for His glory:
Phil 1:11 (NIV) filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ--to the glory and praise of God.
In fact, all we do is to be for His glory -- that can be a scary thought, Don't you think?
1 Cor 10:31 (NIV) So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
EVERYthing is for His glory:
Rom 11:36 (NIV) For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.

Let your life, actions, deeds and words be All for His Glory....God bless.

Christmas Greetings

From my family to yours I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and may God's richest blessings be realized today as we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. If you are traveling today or this week, be safe and enjoy the time with family and friends and remember, Jesus is the Reason for Christmas. God bless.

Jesus Our Hope

One of my favorite preachers is Dr. Tony Evans and he wrote this excerpt from his book Totally Saved , "We have lasting hope through the salvation we have in Christ ... Hope means that even when it looks like it's all over, it's not all over yet. That's why the Bible says we can rejoice even in our tribulations. God is working in our hard times to produce proven character and hope in us."
The Bible tells us in Psalm 33-22"May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you." (NIV). For millions of people, the Christmas season means nothing more than parties, gifts, decorations, and time off work. For Christians, however, this time of year is a happy reminder of the hope we have because of Jesus Christ. Before Jesus came, God seemed distant, hidden in the Holy of Holies in the temple, accessible only to the high priest. Worshippers wondered whether their sacrifices were acceptable. They doubted their salvation. Christ means hope—to the person out of work, to the struggling single mother, to the dying believer. Even if you're just slogging your way through the disappointments and problems of life, if you have Jesus, you have hope. And he is not a false hope, a childish fairy tale that we wish will have a happy ending. When Christ rose again from the grave that ended the argument. Our hope in him is solid and it is real. Christmas is a renewal of that hope. It reconfirms it for us if our vision has grown dim. It was settled long ago, so we don't have to doubt any more. Jesus is the fulfillment of our hope, our deepest longings come true.

Celebrate the Birth of Jesus at Christmas

"And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 14 “ Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” (Luke 2:9-11)

Monday Morning Cup of Joe

I hope everyone has had a great weekend and here in Indiana, it is extremely cold. The temperature is in the single digits and the wind chills are horrifc (10-20 dgrees below zero). I am home today with my kids who are now officially on Christmas break until January 12th. They are really excited about Christmas coming up this week and they are looking forward to Santa Claus coming to our house. I am going to be traveling this week with my family out of town but I will check in this week from time to time with some entries so eveyone have a great week and Happy Holidays to all. God bless.

God Cares About Our Pain

In Matthew 5:4 Jesus said, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. We all suffer grief. Sometimes it's the excruciating pain of losing someone we are very close to, whether through death or a move or just a loss of the relationship. Sometimes it's a change in a relationship. It might be a job loss, the loss of a pet, or a failure of some sort, which is the death of a dream. Whatever our pain, we need to remember three things:
1.God understands.
2.God cares.
3.God can bring us through it and even make something beautiful out of it.
God empathizes with our pain. His own Son, Jesus -- Who is God -- suffered grief. I think readily of one example. John 11:33-35 (NRSV) When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34 He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." 35 Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!"
Of all people, Jesus certainly knew about Heaven. He knew that Lazarus wasn't suffering. But He also knew that it hurt, to lose him. Even though we know someone is suffering less, or something is for the best, God doesn't expect us to just act like nothing has happened, or say "Well He is with Jesus praise God," and go happily on our way. It is wonderful to keep an eternal perspective. However, God has built grief into us as a normal emotion, and we need to allow ourselves to feel it and work through it. God cares about our pain. He knows everything, including our emotions, but He wants to hear from us. Psalm 62:8 (NRSV) Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.
He wants us to pour out our hearts to Him. He wants to hear our hurts. He isn't a God who distances Himself from what we are going through. He is a loving and compassionate God, a Shepherd, a Father. Those of you who are parents -- think about how you feel for your children when they are grieving, over a friend who has moved, a beloved pet who has been killed.
And our Heavenly Father loves us even more than we love our children. Imagine how much more than that even, He cares for us in our griefs! But the ultimate perspective we have does need to be eternal, as well as God's glory and purpose even now. And we often find God has taught us valuable lessons from our pain. I think of two valuable insights I have gained through pains I have encountered:

1. I can now better understand others' pain.
When we are hurting, and afterwards, we need to ask God to use this for His glory and to help his other children.
2 Corinthians 1:4 (NIV) who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
Romans 8:28 (NIV) And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

2. I cherish now the relationships that I have.
I realize how short life can be, and that we need to tell people now how much we appreciate them. We need to take time for the family and friends God has blessed us with. Remember them during this Holiday Season and all throughout the year.

It's Cold Here In Indiana

I hope everyone is having a good start to their week. I woke up this morning and it was a frigid 13 degrees outside and windy and COLD. It took me nearly twenty minutes to warm up my car and I don't think I thawed out until this afternoon. It should get warmer this week but it is going to be cold, some snow and not real pleasant. Hopefully we have too much of an arctic blast. God bless and everyone have a blessed week.

The True Meaning of Christmas

"And there were in the same country shepherds, abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them! And they were sore afraid ... And the angel said unto them, "Fear not! For, behold, I bring you tidings o great joy, which shall be to all my people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ, the Lord." "And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger." And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the Heavenly Host praising God, and saying, "Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth peace, and good will toward men." "That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown." - Linus Van Pelt

Being a 24/7 Christian

Mahatma Gandhi was once asked, "What is the greatest hindrance to Christianity in India?" He replied, "Other Christians." Gandhi was referring to the hypocrisy that the non-believers were seeing in the inconsistent behavior of the Christians around them. As a Pastor, the more I speak with people who will have nothing to do with Christianity, the more I hear the words, "Why should I believe? You Christians are no different than us." Some of my own experiences with Christians in a local church left me disillusioned and confused, and I have been a pastor for eleven years. The same people who were teaching on Sunday morning, the same people that were shaking hands and talking a good game, were the ones who were lying, cheating and doing unethical business deals on Monday. In the gospel of Luke, John the Baptist called the religious of his day, a “brood of vipers.” John's harsh words for the people of his time could equally be applied to "church" people today. Some see church as a necessary place to go to on Sunday. It is something to check off the to-do list, or a way to make the boss happy and perhaps a place to acquire new clients. But come Monday, all the church stuff goes in the desk drawer. The Bible tells us in 1 John 1:6-“If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” The Bible also teaches and instructs us with these words in James 1:22-“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James is saying, "Don't just be hearers of the Word; but do what it says and teaches!" John's verse says we are liars if we go on living in our old ways. When we put on the uniform for Christ, people watch us. Christians are by no means perfect, but we can strive to be better each day. We can strive to live in a way that gives people incentive to say or think, "I want what you have. Your life seems better -- your actions are different, and I like what I see. Tell me why you are different." If you are in a management position, are you using Biblical values to determine how you treat your employees? As an employee, are you a clock-watcher, just doing enough to get by, or are you doing your work for your Ultimate Boss -- God? Teachers and students, are you displaying Christian characteristics at school? If you are a student, are you complaining about assignments and doing just what you have to, to "get by" -- or are you giving it your best, eager to learn? And at home, are you reflecting Christ in your behavior? I encourage you this week to begin trying to be more like Christ in every area of your life. Let's strive to be Christian 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It will make a difference in your life as well as the lives of those around you.

It's Okay to Say Merry Christmas

I have noticed in the past few years that each year at Christmas time, many retail and department stores have changed their greetings from "Merry Christmas" to "Season's Greetings" or "Happy Holidays." I know that corporate department and retail stores have the right to promote Christmas however they wish, but to take away the words "Merry Christmas" from your stores promotion and greeting of the Christmas season is not being respectful of the true meaning of Christmas. Jesus is the reason for the season and we should remember that and I for one will continue to say "Merry Christmas" and if the stores I frequent this Christmas season don't say "Merry Christmas" then I will simply take my retail business elsewhere and I am sure that there will be another store that will be happy to say "Merry Christmas" and accept my money and purchase. Just some food for thought. God bless you and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The Joy of the Lord is My Strength

Habakkuk 3:17 &18 - "Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall no herd be in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation." (KJV)
On of my favorite characters in the Bible is Job. There are lots of people who talk about the "patience of Job", and yet there was more than just patience at risk. One after another, messengers brought news, "While he was still speaking....". And yet, after losing his herds, his home, his servants, and finally his family, he still praised God. Satan's one desire is to break us Christians, troubles and trials are always coming our way! It seems that sometimes the more we follow God's plan for our lives, the harder things get. And yet, God is the God of circumstances, too. No matter how bleak it seems, He is in control. How we face the trials and troubles that come our way determine whether we win or lose the battle. The war is already won, but the battles are ours. It's easier to face today when we know that God has promised us tomorrow. Isaiah 64:4 says, "For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither eye seen, O God, beside Thee, what He hath prepared for him that waiteth for Him." Fight the good fight of faith and remember that our God reigns, He has already determined the outcome. Hold fast, and keep your eye on tomorrow, and Praise the Lord.

HOPE

Christmas is a holiday full of hopes - hopes of family reconciliations, hopes of picture-perfect celebrations, hopes of getting certain presents. Some of our hopes are fulfilled; others are not. But hoping in God is always a sure bet; people will let us down, but He never will. Let's look at what the word of God has to say about hope.

(Psalm 33:18 NNAS) "Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, On those who hope for His lovingkindness,"

(Job 13:15 NNAS) "Though He slay me, I will hope in Him. Nevertheless I will argue my ways before Him.

(Psalm 71:5 NNAS) "For You are my hope; O Lord GOD, You are my confidence from my youth."

(Psalm 130:7 NNAS) "O Israel, hope in the LORD; For with the LORD there is lovingkindness, And with Him is abundant redemption."

(Proverbs 23:18 NNAS) "Surely there is a future, And your hope will not be cut off."

(Jeremiah 29:11 NNAS) "'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope."

(Romans 8:24-25 NNAS) "For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it."

(Hebrews 6:19-20 NNAS) "This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20 where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek."

(1 Peter 1:13 NNAS) "Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ."

(1 John 3:2-3 NNAS) "Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure."

Just a Thought From a Pastor

Isn't it strange how a 20 dollar bill seems like such a large amount when you donate it to church, but such a small amount when you go shopping?

Remember that Christmas is a time for giving and as we give gifts to others make sure we don't forget to give back to God, a portion of what He graciously gives to us each day of our lives. And thanks be unto to God for his unspeakable gift, His Son Jesus Christ, whom he sent to earth to die for the sins of mankind.

My Favorite Christmas Movie

"No! No! I want an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle!"

I hope everyone had a good weekend. It's still snowing here in Indiana and I am sure that my kids will make another snowman this week if the snow doesn't melt. This weekend was a good one as I spent time with family and enjoyed a wonderful Holiday Dinner with my church family. My kids and I last week watched one of our favorite Christmas movies, "A Christmas Story". I still laugh at Ralphie as he struggles to try to convince his parents that he needs an official Red Rider BB gun. You probably know how the story ends and I hope you get a chance to watch your favorite movies this holiday season and I hope you have a blessed week.

It's Snowing Today

Today was a great day at The Rock. We had our annual Holiday Dinner and enjoyed great fellowship and a wonderful holiday dinner. I was most thankful for everyone who made it out today due to the fact tht we had snow this morning (as seen by my neighbor's Pontiac Vibe) and the roads were very slippery but God kept us all safe and got everyone home safely. This was a very nice end to a busy week and weekend. God bless you all and have a great day.

Signs of the Times

No doubt this pastor is a "Hellfire and Brimstone" preacher. I am just thankful he's not afraid to mention the word Hell in the church or on the church sign. It's not taboo to mention that people can die in sin and be separated from God in Hell. Hopefully none of us will every make it to that point. God bless and have a great weekend.

Vessels Of Honor

"But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some of honour, and some to dishonour" (II Timothy 2:20).

There are different vessels for the Lord's service - vessels of grace and of disgrace. The only way that we can become vessels unto honor is to have godly thinking in our minds. David Livingston used to say that he ate, drank and slept for the people he ministered to. He said he was dead to anything else. We need to allow God's Word to sanctify us (set us apart), and make us available for the Kingdom of God just as David Livingston was. We must remember - it is only when the furnace becomes hot that the Word of God is revealed in our lives. How does a Christian come to know his calling in God's work? He becomes sanctified by the Word of God. He finds that there is no need to be concerned with the details of life, for God arranges them. God continually works His life in us through His Word so that we will be vessels of honor fit for His service.

"And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory " (Romans 9:23).

Lip Service

King Cyrus of Persia didn't just say things to get attention. He backed up his words with action. According to the book of Ezra, during his first year on the throne, Cyrus ordered to rebuild the temple in an effort to honor the Lord. As king, Cyrus was very specific in his commands. The temple would have a strong foundation, specific measurements, and a new wood floor. All the people of Jerusalem should have a part in working on the building, he commanded.
The king didn't just mean physical labor. People could provide finances, clothing, transportation, or offer supplies. The king himself vowed that all gold bowls and other valuable items originally taken from the temple would be returned. The next time we agree to volunteer, or tell someone that we are Christians, be ready. We need to make sure we are able to back up our words, and not let them be just lip service.

Preparing for Church Thanksgiving Dinner

Well it's Monday, and I hope that you all had a great weekend and I hope your week is off to a good start. I spent most of the day preparing for our Thanksgiving Day Dinner we hold each year at our church. We start on Monday and work through Wednesday and serve dinner on Thanksgiving Day and deliver meals to the elderly citizens and those who are in need of Thanksgiving Dinner. We served over 530 meals last year and this year we will increase that number. We will cook over 50 turkeys this week and it all starts with yours truly here firing up the stoves and putting in the first turkey and cooking the turkeys. It should be a great week and praise the Lord for meeting all of our needs and providing everything we need this year for Thanksgiving. Have a great week.

Sunday, November 23, 2008

"In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
As we approach the Thanksgiving Holiday, we need to stop and remember that Thanksgiving is not something we should do wants a year. We should be giving thanks throughout each and every day of our lives. Paul tells us in the scripture in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 to give thanks in everything. Whether this is good or bad, we should thank God for His grace and mercy and realize how blessed we are as children of God. We have so much to be thankful for when we realize how good the Lord has been to us. God bless everyone and have a blessed week.

Seeing Problems as Possibilities

“. . . the God of heaven, He will prosper us; therefore we His servants will arise and build. . .” Nehemiah 2:20

Do you have any problems today? You do? Well, I just have one word for you:

“Congratulations!” I don’t want to sound flippant, but I am very serious about my comment. You see, a problem really is an opportunity in disguise.

You need to learn that God wants you to see your problems as potentialities and your adversaries as opportunities. A Christian is not someone who sees a difficulty in every opportunity, but to the contrary, he’s one who sees an opportunity in every difficulty.
Think of a problem you are struggling through today. Now, get on your knees. Ask God to show you the opportunity hidden away in your struggle that will bring Him glory.

Albert Pujols Named 2008 MVP

Congratulations to Albert Pujols, who today was named the National League's Most Valuable Player for 2008. This is a great honor for Albert Pujols and this is his second time being named the MVP of the National League. As a lifelong Cardinals fan, I am so thankful that I get to watch him play and I saw him this summer in St. Louis at Busch Stadium with my daughter Madison, who is also a big fan of Albert Pujols. We sure are happy for "Grande Numero Cinco" and hopefully he'll have a great 2009. GO CARDINALS!

Faith When Your Funds Are Low

In Luke 21:1-4 we read the story of the poor widow who gave her two mites in the temple treausry while the rich men all around her were putting in their offerings. However, Jesus said that she from her poverty had given more than anyone else. How could this be possible? Jesus taught us that our faithfulness in giving and our attitude in our giving is greater than the size of our gift to God. The truth is that God doesn't need our money and he owns everything and we are simply stewards of His possessions. This widow gave all she had and her heart was right, and God honored her and the Lord Jesus spoke of her faithfulness and it is now recorded in the Word of God. Be faithful in your giving, even when funds are low, and God will bless and reward you.

Why We Love Communion

This weekend we are receiving communion and I saw this cartoon and had to post it. Our church family at The Rock Church takes communion very seriously and we look forward to receiving from the Lord's Table. Don't worry.....we use the trays!

Signs of the Times

This is beyond comprehension, it really boggles my mind that a pastor would title his Sunday message with these words, but worse yet that he would put the title on the church sign....Lord help this church. God bless you and have a great weekend.

Where Is Your Treasure?

As I read my Bible I am reminded that Jesus had some poignant things to say about our hearts:

Luke 16:15 (NIV) He said to them, "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable in God's sight.

Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV) "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Where is your treasure? What do you value? This world values prestige and money. It values power. It treasures education and accomplishments. And these things are not bad of course, in themselves; they are evil only if they are our motivating factor, if we put them above God, above the people in our lives. Sometimes, even we Christians get caught up in this system. We become overly impressed with credentials, we choose jobs because of money. (I'm talking about extremes of course; we all need money!) God's value system is different from the world's. David says, "We make 'value' judgements.... the world's values or God's... its a choice we make.." What God treasures is our heart, our love for Him and each other, our service of Him and our fellowman. When Christ chose disciples, He did not choose celebrities. And Paul's devoted fellow workers were probably not on the invitation list of the parties of the upper crust of society, those our world esteems as "important." 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 (NRSV) Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, 29 so that no one might boast in the presence of God. God wants us to treasure His Kingdom, and our families and friends.
Matthew 6:33 (NRSV) But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
I believe it was Barbara Bush that said (this may not be an exact quote, but it gets to the heart of it) that when we get to the end of this earthly life, we will never say "Gee I wish I had spent more time pursuing success." What is often said is something like this: "I wish I had spent more time playing with my children. Someone has said that an effective means of determining what we treasure, is to look at our checkbook entries over the last month. How much was spent to advance the Kingdom, to help others? How much was spent on our pleasures? We need to keep this in balance.

Just Some Food for Thought

I know this may not set well with some people, but I saw this online and it made me stop and think. Our national election is over and we have a new president-elect in Barack Obama. However, I am very concerned with the so called "Messianic" aura and mantra that seems to be around Mr. Obama. This past Sunday in churches (mostly African-American) all around the country, many pastors and churches are celebrating his election and it is historic and worthy of attention. Howeveer, I believe the Bible says we go to church to worship God, not praise a man. I think we need to remember this simple fact about Barack Obama. He is just a man, and will make mistakes and will not solve all your problems. Let us be very careful how we look upon our new president-elect. I didn't vote for him but I will pray for him. For those who want to espouse some spiritual diety to Barack Obama, remember what the Word of God says, "Thou shalt have no other Gods before me." Serve God and not man. Just a thought.

The Spiritual Discipline of Fasting

In my opinion fasting is a "lost" discipline. Few sermons are preached on fasting and I have found in teaching Bible studies that even the most seasoned Christians lack knowledge and understanding of fasting. Let's look at what Jesus said about fasting. Matthew 6:16 "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. (NIV) Jesus expects us to fast. He said "When you fast", not if you fast, when you feel like fasting, or if you are so inclined to fast. Notice too that Jesus did not say you MUST fast. Let's not become legalistic like the Pharisees and let's certainly not be like the hypocrites who fasted for the wrong reasons. Acts 13:2-3 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. (NIV) What then is the right reason to fast? Fasting should always be for spiritual purposes. Clearly in the above verse the early church fasted, worshipped and prayed. That, my friends, is the key to fasting. It should be a voluntary, private, worshipful and prayerful time between you and our Heavenly Father. My most successful fasts have been when I concentrated on one aspect, one desire, one yearning and one longing to be closer to God and to listen to His will for my life. For example, if I am reading the Bible and the Holy Spirit clearly illuminates a passage for me in a way that I can only describe as supernatural, I will fast and meditate on that passage during the entire fast. I have also found great success in concentrating on one prayer during a fast. The prayer is usually a prayer of thanksgiving for what Christ has done for me, and one desire that I pray God will grant to me. Again the key is to focus on Christ during the fast. Good fasts have always been life-changing for me. What's a bad fast? When I fast for the wrong reason or the wrong attitude in my heart. I have had fasts in which I never experienced the presence of God. Looking back I always was fasting without focusing on Christ during the fast. So, how do you fast? I always suggest to people to start slow, and of course if you have any medical problems, consult your doctor before fasting. On that note, fasting can be the witholding of anything you desire; it does not have be an absence of food. So anyone can fast. I recommend people start out with a 24-hour fast. This simply means skipping two meals. Preferably breakfast and lunch. I do drink water during the fast; some folks drink fruit juice. There are no rules. During the day when the hunger pains occur, pray and focus on Christ and on your purpose for the fast. The pains always remind me of how helpless I am without God. He provides all my needs. There are several books on fasting. I recommend finding a good book and learning more about how to fast in a safe and spiritual way.
Dear Father, thank You again for this time we have together. Thank You for providing all our needs. Father, we are truly nothing apart from You. Father, draw us closer to You. Help us to have the desire to know you more intimately. Most of all we praise You and thank You for Your Son Jesus Christ, Who gave up ALL for us. In His name, Amen.

God Is Our Provider

Well we are two days removed from our election and by all indications, the economy is not doing very well and the business markets have been in a steep decline the past two days. I know many people are starting to worry. Are you a worrier? I confess that I worry about certain things. And I know it's a weakness that I need to work on; in fact, it's a sin! The Word is pretty clear on this in Romans 14:23 (NIV) But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin. "Everything that does not come from faith is sin...." Wow...convicting words, for me anyway! So everything we say and do should be immersed in faith....I believe the way to get that faith and grow in it, is to soak in the Word, fellowship with strong Christians and pray. Logically speaking, there is no reason for us to worry, anyway. As the Word points out, God will provide for us. In fact, sometimes I believe God puts us in situations where we have to rely on Him, as did the Israelites thousands of years ago. Moses writes in Exodus 16:13 (NIV) "That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp." And Jesus also reminded us that God is our provider as he said in Matthew 6:28-33 (NIV) "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first His kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." And after all, when we look to God as our provider -- whether spiritually, emotionally or physically, there are no limitations: Philippians 4:19 (NIV) "And my God will meet all (emphasis mine) your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus." My prayer for all of us today, is that we learn to rest in God's love and provision for us, and to "put off" our worries, perhaps by praying about them, and forcing ourselves to think about something else when we begin to worry, though I know that is easier said than done! Hope you all have a good weekend!

Obama Wins Historic Election

Well the votes are in and Barack H. Obama has been elected the 44th President of the United States and the country's first black president. He overwhelmingly defeated John McCain and will also have majorities in the House of Represenatives and the Senate. As a McCain supporter, I am obviously disappointed, and I am also somewhat concerned for our country. I hope that Mr. Obama will lead this country by uniting both sides and working with members of the opposition, but I have a feeling he and his fellow Democrats in congress, will overreach and try to enact legistlation that will hurt our country and our economy. That seems to be the historical trend for both parties in Washington. At 37 years of age, I am old enough to remember, quite well, the horrible years of Jimmy Carter and his administration and I am convinced that Mr. Obama is even further to the left than Mr. Carter was when he served as President. I know Mr. Obama has a tough job ahead and he is indeed in my prayers. I just don't have a lot of confindence in his ability or his ideas for the future of our country. As a Pastor and a Christian I feel in my spirit that our country is heading for some difficult times ahead and I seriously doubt Barack Obama can handle the problems our country will face. Hopefully he will prove me wrong.

Election Day

Well it's election day here in the United States and even though I am still sick I voted. I encourage everyone to make it out to the polls and vote. This morning I went to our local polling station and voted with my eight year old daughter. I've been watching the polictal campaign for the past 24 months and I made my decision to vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin. This was an important election and my daughter wanted to go with me to help cast my vote for Sarah Palin. I think she will make a great Vice President if elected and she will be a great role model for my daughter and countless other Americans. Regardless of who wins, this is still a great country and we are privilged to live in the USA, the greatest country in the world. God bless and GO VOTE!

Satan's Plan for the Church

We all pray and want God to fulfill His plan for our lives, but yet our enemy Satan has a plan for our lives also. John 10:10 tells us "For the thief, (Satan) cometh not but for to steal, kill and destroy.." Satan's plan for Christians and the church is two-fold:

1. Satan Tells Christians That Sin Has No Consequences

Sin does have a price and Galatians 6:6-"Be not decieved, God is not mocked. For whatsoever a man sows that shall he also reap." Our actions have consequences and when we sin against God we will have a price to pay. Satan's great lie is that we can live anyway we want to live and that God will still love us and overlook our sins. This just simply isn't true.

2. Satan Also Tells Us That We Don't Need To Live Holy or Righteous

Paul tells us in Romans 12:2-"And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your minds. That ye may be able to prove what is that good and perfect and acceptable will of God." We are not of this world, since we have been born-again by the Holy Spirit, we are filled with the spirit and led by the spirit. John tells us to not love the world or conform our life to the world. Satan tells us we can be like the world and the world will accept us, yet we are not to conform to the world and the works of darkness.

The Bible tells us to give no place to the devil and don't give ear to his lies...serve God faithfully and resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Should We Fear Death?

Death. It is something that both intrigues the world, and scares the world. It is something that we are faced with everyday, sometimes expectedly, and other times not. It is something that causes philosophers to sit and wonder, what really happens when someone dies. Is there a soul? Is there an afterlife? And if so, what is the afterlife like? Some people have set answers as to what happens after death. The very thought of death brings a deep conviction, a fear of the unknown. But for Christians, death is something else all together. There is a hope, a life existing with God. I remember reading about Cassie Bernall in "She Said Yes." When she was asked if she believed in God, she quickly replied "Yes," most likely knowing that answer would cause her death. Yet, at an extremely young age, Cassie died with a great hope. A hope that there was something more, something worth proclaiming.Because as sad as death is for us on earth, and as much as we mourn and miss those who have passed; the truth is, death is only the end of our life on earth. We pass from death to live with God, in Heaven, for eternity (2 Corinthians 5:15). We move on to a place where we can truly glorify our Lord, a place that is free from pain and suffering (Revelation 21:3-4). As Christians, we should not be ignorant, as Paul says, regarding those who have passed away. Rather we should rejoice that they are with the Lord, in a place more peaceful and joyous than we can ever imagine. And for ourselves, when darkness seems to surround us, we should remember that nothing can separate us from God's love (Romans 8:38-39), and that we have absolutely no reason to fear death (1 John 4:17). Or as one person put it, "A Christian's life is really nothing more than a bus ticket to Heaven... sure it may be a bumpy ride now and then, but the destination is worth the price paid."

Beware of the Silent Killer

Exodus 15:23-26-"And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah. And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them, And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee."

Murmuring or complaining is one of those sins that are overlooked. Sometimes we get so focused on the “big sins” such as murder and adultery that we overlook this sin — but the Lord doesn’t give this sin a free pass — quite the opposite. It’s a hidden killer! This sin unleashed a plague that killed thousands of Israelites! [Numbers 16] In this passage, we read how the Israelites, who were desperately thirsty, looked only at the fact that the water they had come to was bitter and undrinkable. How quickly they forgot their God who had led them out of Egypt with signs and wonders. They had just witnessed His dividing of the Red Sea and destruction of those who had enslaved them. And yet, so quickly they returned to looking only with their natural eyes at the problem in front of them, completely forgetting the miracle working power of their God! And so they murmured against Moses. But honestly, weren’t they really murmuring against God? Once again, Moses interceded for them, revealing the faithfulness of His God to answer every impossible dilemma and provide for every need; and again, setting them the example: they simply needed to go the Lord! So often, just like the Israelites, we focus on our desperate situation with our physical eyes, and not with eyes of faith, and then fall into the trap of complaining. And if you’re like me, once I start, it can be really hard to stop…until the Lord stops me, right in my tracks, and He reminds me –- aren’t you really complaining against me? I have to remember to see that I actually hinder the Lord’s answers to my problems by unbelief…which leads to the sin of murmuring! Let’s not allow this sin to gain a foothold — because it can easily become a stronghold! The same wonder working God that led the children of Israel out of Egypt, is still at work today — but are we hindering Him? If we are grumbling and complaining, the answer is, “YES”! And in so doing, until we stop, we are missing out on His answers and blessings which are waiting in the wings to meet our faith in Him!

Sign of the Times....

I was surfing the internet and found something I think is funny. I have seen a lot of church signs....but this one takes the cake! I think even Larry the "Cable Guy" would attend this church. Assuming he attends church.

Monday Morning Cup of Joe

Well we are starting another week and I hope and trust that you enjoyed the weekend. It was cold here in Indiana and fall has definitely arrived. The air is crisper and we have begun using our fireplace and it's cold this morning as I write this blog. But I have to say that I love this time of year and I enjoy the changing of the seasons. I am just thankful God never changes and His mercies are new every morning. Great is God's faithfulness to us. I hope you have a great week and enjoy the beautiful fall scenery. God bless.

Obedience

To God, obedience is extremely important, in fact, it's a big deal. And one of the best ways to see just how importantly He regards it is to learn from those who disobeyed God and the Bible has many examples of people who disobeyed God. One such person is King Saul. When he was told by God to make an end of the Amalekites and to destroy all of their property, he did not do it. Instead of obeying God, he saved the oxen and the sheep, along with some other things, and then claimed he had obeyed God. But when Samuel heard the oxen and the sheep, Saul knew he had been caught. So he changed his story. He said, “Well, these things are just a sacrifice to God.” In response to this act of disobedience, this is what Samuel, the prophet, said. We find it in 1 Samuel 15:22, So Samuel said: “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.” God does not want religious lip service. He wants obedience. Obedience is better than sacrifice. One reason for that is because you cannot make up by sacrifice what you lose through disobedience. Another reason why obedience is better than sacrifice is because it is preventative. In Saul’s day, sacrifices were made to cover sin, but if he had obeyed, there would have been no need for sacrifice. Obedience would have prevented his sin. So do what God desires. Obey what He commands. It is always better.

Sign of the Times...

We are about finished with this current election cycle which seems to have lasted forever, and in spite of who wins, I saw this church sign and it reminded me of who really "rules the universe." I am glad that God doesn't run for public office or need opinion polls or political ads to prove who He is to us. He says in the book of Isaiah 43:10-I am the Lord your God and beside me there is no other." I am so glad for that. God bless everyone. Have a great day.

Monday Morning Cup of Joe

I hope everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed the cool weather. This week begins a two week fall break for my children, and today I am home on my day off spending the day with my kids. I was away last week at our denomination's annual district convention here in the state of Indiana and I was unable to make many blog entries. However, I am back in the swing of things and I am enjoying having some family time today. I hope you all have a great week and God bless.

Priorities

Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold.— Proverbs 8:10

Focus on the Family's H.B. London conducted a conference for pastors and their spouses, and during the conference took a survey. One of the questions asked was, "If you could change one thing that would improve your present situation, what would it be?" Their answers:

More family time.
A more receptive laity.
Better management of time.
A regular program of physical exercise.
A trustworthy person in whom to confide.

These responses are a reflection of their priorities. Priorities are frequently ordered by preference. We have our likes and dislikes and we often do what we want to, when we want to. Priorities are also arranged by urgency. The urgency of the problem or dilemma has a way of dictating what matters. Finally, priorities are set by importance — the greatest good for the greatest number. A college professor in Oklahoma asks everyone he knows and teaches, "What is your philosophy of life?" Most are shocked at such a question, because it asks them to capsulize their priorities a bit too tightly. But it is a good question, for your priorities reflect your philosophy of life. Would you need to reorder your priorities to live according to your philosophy of life?

A New Day Dawns for the Rams

Halleluja! The St. Louis Rams finally turned the page on the horrific era of former head coach Scott Linehan and gave new head coach Jim Haslett his first victory as coach of the Rams. Josh Brown kicked a 49 yard field goal with 2 seconds remaining to give the Rams a 19-17 win over the Washington Redskins in the nations capital. This is also the Rams first victory this year and they are now 1-4 on the season. Maybe this is the start of good things ahead for the Rams. I am one happy fan....GO RAMS!

Thoughts for the Heart

"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee" (Isaiah 26:3)

"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 2:5)

If you are in a stressful or difficult time in your life right now, you know full well how difficult it can be to have any peace of mind. However, as these scriptures tell us, when we have the mind of Christ, and keep our hearts and minds focused on Him, he will give us peace. The kind of peace that transcends all human thought or ability and allows us to endure hardship, trials, sorrow, and difficulties. Always remember that you have peace because you are trusting in the Prince of Peace.

I Trust You

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; in you I trust, O my God. (Psalm 25:1-2)
We live in a world today that is very untrustworthy. We are afraid to trust anyone for fear that they may go back on their word. Which is why when someone expresses trust in me, I am very grateful. I know myself well enough to know there is a great capacity for falling short, but if someone else voices confidence in me, I am greatly encouraged to be and do my best. I know my power to do anything comes from Christ-I'm not trusting in my own abilities How do you think the Lord feels when we say to Him, "I trust You"? Knowing my unworthiness, I am very happy when someone trusts me. But the Lord is totally worthy of all our trust! No wonder Proverbs 3:5 says "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and he shall direct your path." While others may fail you or disappoint you, God will never break our trust in Him. He is the only one we can fully trust for everything in our lives. I think this must be why He rejoices over us "with shouts of joy" (Zephaniah 3:17). Let's rejoice His heart today.

Forgiveness

If you're finding it hard to forgive yourself for something you've done in the past, it may be that you're reaping what you have sown. And it's particularly hard (but not impossible) to keep from feeling bad when you've condemned somebody else for doing the same thing. Here's a scriptural truth you need to understand, accept and live by; as long as you're alive you will have to keep forgiving – yourself and others!
When guilt and condemnation tell you your sins are too big for God's forgiveness, remember what Paul said: "Jesus…came…to save sinners. I'm proof – Public Sinner Number One…someone who could have never made it apart from sheer mercy…evidence of his endless patience." Before his conversion Paul persecuted the church, killing and torturing believers. It's how he made his living! And if he could learn to forgive himself, you can too! In fact, when you don't you're implying that your transgressions are beyond the scope of God's grace to forgive and Jesus' blood to cleanse. And that's a bigger sin – pride! Plus, when somebody always has "issues" with other people, they may be looking for somebody to offend them; that way they can point out how bad the other person is and feel better about themselves. Pride and a judgmental attitude feed off each other the way humility feeds off forgiveness. God said, "I, am the one who wipes out your transgressions for My own sake. And I will not remember your sins" (Isa 43:25 NASB). When you adopt a humble attitude and work on forgiving yourself the way God has, it's a lot easier to overlook other people's mistakes. Give it a try; you'll be amazed!

Blessing of Tithing

"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. ..." says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it."
-Malachi 3:10 (NIV)

As a teenager, I asked stepfather why our family tithed. He told me that God commanded our tithes and that as faithful Christians we should give God 10% of our income. I asked him, "How did the rest of the money stretch for the things you needed?" He answered, "We don't need to stretch our earnings because the Lord will multiply them." I'm grateful to my stepfather and mother for teaching their children to tithe. I'm thankful that my parents helped me understand that the Lord will multiply whatever we give and use it to enrich others' lives as well as our own.

Monday Morning Quarterback

Well thank the Lord, my prayers have been answered. The St. Louis Rams finally made a decision that was a long time in coming. Head Coach Scott Linehan was fired today and was replaced by Jim Haslett. I for one applaud this move by owner Chip Rosenbloom and I am now able to finally have reason to be optimistic, if not for this year, perhaps the future. I am sure that coach Linehan was a good man and by all indications he is, but he was not the right choice three years ago to lead this team and I think we now have a coach who will at least get the team in the right direction. I am behind Coach Haslett.....GO RAMS!!!!!

How To Be Safe

How to stay safe
1. Avoid riding in automobiles because they are responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents.
2. Do not stay home because 17% of all accidents occur in the home.
3. Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks because 24% of all accidents occur to pedestrians.
4. Avoid traveling by air, rail or water because 16% of all accidents involve these forms of transportation.
5. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in hospitals.Above all else, avoid hospitals.

You will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in worship service in church, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. Therefore, logic tell us that the safest place for you to be at any given point of time is at church.Bible study is safe too.The percentage of deaths during Bible study is even less. FOR SAFETY'S SAKE . . . Attend Church and Bible Study today !IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE !

Peace

This week has been a very stressful week for many people. Many of us are closely watching the financial crisis that is affecting the financial markets in the United States, along with the banking and credit industries and this is posing a great threat to our national economy and our way of life. Some people are wondering if their 401 k plans will recover from the losses and others are worried that their life savings and investments will fail. So a lot of us could say we have good reason to worry. If we are honest, we would have to say we are worried and lacking any real peace of mind. For some of us, peace is very hard to find in our daily lives because we are worried about our families, our jobs, our health, our marriage and a host of many other concerns. Yet, the Lord Jesus, gave us a wonderful promise in John 14:27 when he said “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (NIV)
I have been pondering--do we really appropriate that peace He offers us? How might it change our lives if we did! Because of our lack of peace, we suffer from anxiety, high blood pressure, sleepless nights, inability to accomplish all we should, and more.
Are you a worrier? I am about certain things -- Oh I do fine with little things that aren’t too difficult to handle, but when it comes to things close to my heart, I worry a lot. But you know what? Sometimes I think we believe that worrying is just part of "doing our part." But actually, worry is sin. Paul warns us in Romans 14:23 with these words, “But those who have doubts are condemned if they eat, because they do not act from faith; for whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.” (NRSV)
If we truly lived in His peace, I believe it could revolutionize our lives. We would have less heartache, fewer sleepless nights, lower blood pressure, and most likely be more productive, also! So no matter what situations we are dealing with right now in our lives, realize that God is in control of everything, and the Lord Jesus is the one who can speak peace into your life and the situations you face. Begin each day by praying that God will help you to grasp and utilize the peace God wants you to live in. He can give you that peace, and what a difference it will make.

Financial Crisis Threatens Economy

Right now many Americans are worried about the pending financial crisis that has affected the financial markets in the United States. It has affected Wall Street, the banking industry as well as Main Street America. Many people's 401 K and Pension plans are being threatened. Yet, in this time we need to stand firm on God's word and trust that God will see us through this crisis. The Word of God says, "The silver is mine and the gold is mine, declares the Lord Almighty." Haggai 2:8. No matter what befalls our nation, and what the final result of this crisis will be, God is in control. God bless.

Scripture Verse for Today

God's a prayer answering God, call on Him....

Pursue Patience

"The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride." Ecclesiastes 7:8, NIV

Waiting isn't easy, but it's worth it. Since God has an eternal perspective on life, He may sometimes act more slowly than you wish He would. And people, with all their weaknesses, may often fail to meet your expectations. So patience is vitally important to have and put into practice. Here are some ways you can strive to be more patient:

1. Pray for God to give you the faith you need to trust Him with situations in which you need to wait. When you trust that God has your best interests at heart (as he does!), then you'll find it easier to be patient. Think about the ways God has worked in your life in the past, and expect more blessings in the future.

2. For a week or so, keep a journal in which you record all the occasions that caused you to become angry or disappointed each day. Look back on your journal and consider how your frustration led to impatience. Make it a habit of praying about anger or disappointment as it wells up within you, asking God to deal with the situations that cause frustration and give you the patience you need to persevere.

3. Ask God to show how you can slow down your pace in life to better hear how He is guiding you.

4. Write a list of people with whom you have some unresolved issues that are hindering your ability to be patient with them. Contact each person to work through the issues and seek reconciliation in your relationship. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you work through the process.

5. Know that God will cause everything that happens to work together for good to fulfill His purposes. The hope God offers is real.

6. Understand that patience illustrates strength, not weakness. There is real power in patience to bless you and other people.

Monday Morning Cup of Joe

This morning as I start my week I hope that your week is also off to a good start. I thought I might be a little philosophical this morning with a few things I Believe....

I Believe...
That you should always leave loved ones with
loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

I Believe...
That you can keep going long after you think you can't.

I Believe...
That we are responsible for what
we do, no matter how we feel.

I Believe...
That either you control your attitude or it controls you.

I Believe...
That heroes are the people who do what has to be done
when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

God bless everyone today and have a great week.
